Eric Clapton, shortly before he entered IBC Studios, London, to record The Yardbirds' breakthrough single, 'For Your Love' on February 1, 1965.
The Story
Researching the exact date and location of this photograph has proven a challenge. Photographic outtakes from this gig exist — but with wildly attributed dates. And their timelines do not correspond with the heavy wear on Clapton's Fiesta Red Telecaster. Naturally, the heavier the wear, the closer we are to Clapton's departure from The Yardbirds — whose final gig took place on March 3, 1965, at The Bristol Chinese R&B and Jazz Club within The Corn Exchange, Bristol.
After researching six months' worth of '64-'65 Yardbirds gigs, we couldn't arrive at a definitive date or location for our photo. Our best 'informed' guess is that it was taken on January 20, 1965, at The Bromel Club, inside the Bromley Court Hotel, Bromley, Kent (now South London).
