The Story
The Who perform two shows (6:30 & 9:00 PM) at the Kiel Opera House in support of Herman's Hermits — with special guests, The Blues Magoos.
Despite Keith Moon's look of contentment, he's likely still feeling the effects of emergency dental surgery — the result of participating in various misadventures while celebrating his 21st birthday two nights before in Flint, MI. Moon's surgery (and hangover) contributed to him missing the following morning's flight to Philadelphia. Tour manager Ed McCann had no choice but to accompany Moon on a later chartered flight to Philly, but not before settling a substantial hotel bill for the damage caused by the drunken musicians. Depending on the source, numerous retellings of the incident have pinned the final damage amount at $5,000, $24,000, and as high as $50,000. Members of the Hermits have insisted that, as it was their tour, they effectively paid for the damages. McCann likely had all three groups contribute to the bill. Finally, contrary to legend, Keith Moon did not back a Cadillac, a Lincoln Continental, or any other automobile into the Flint, Michigan Holliday Inn swimming pool.

Sometime between same-day shows in Columbus, OH, and Pittsburgh, PA, on September 3, and flying back to Columbus for two more shows on September 4, Gilbert walks through what he thinks is an open glass door. The Magoos' bassist is injured severely enough that the group withdraws from the rest of the Hermits tour, missing high-profile dates in Los Angeles and Hawaii.
On September 17, following two months of touring in North America, The Who return to London. Opening for Herman's Hermits paid The Who $40,000 ($356,900.60 in 2022). But even before they depart, the group has burned through its earnings and is now $5,000 ($44,612.57 in 2022) in debt. Entwistle borrows $100 to fly home first class to keep up appearances.
