The Story

On this week’s Ready Steady Go!, The Kinks perform live versions of ‘Til the End of the Day’ and ‘Milk Cow Blues.’ This image captures their performance of ‘Milk Cow Blues.’

On November 19, threats of litigation for breach of contract from The Kinks’ former music publisher, Kassner Music, barred the group’s originally booked appearance, where they were set to debut ‘Til the End of the Day’ on the day of its release. Kassner Music drops the threat of an injunction on November 24, pending a court decision. A judge orders all songwriting income earned by Ray Davies into an escrow account pending the resolution of the suit. The parties won’t reach an out of court settlement until October 1970, meaning that Davies will receive no publishing royalties until 1970.

While being interviewed by RSG! presenter, Cathy McGowan, Davies utters a classic quote; “[Our on-stage image is] very unprofessional – but we’re not professionals anyway. One of our aims is to stay amateurs. As soon as we become professionals, we’ll be ruined.” — Doug Hinman

Also appearing on this week’s Ready Steady Go!: Manfred Mann, The McCoys (minus Rick Zehringer/interview only), The Spencer Davis Group, The Rockin’ Berries, Dodie West, and The Breakaways
