The Story
The Kinks tape a second in-studio, lip-synced performance of ‘Dead End Street’ on BBC1’s Top of the Pops. The single had just reached its peak position at #6 in the December 29, 1966, Melody Maker chart.
During the run of televised promotional appearances for ‘Dead End Street,’ Pete Quaife and Dave Davies mimed along while playing two bass guitars just as Davies and John Dalton had on the actual recording. Finally, according to Top of the Pops’ Samantha Juste in the following week’s Disc magazine; "Mick Avory had a lovely velvet jacket cut like a smoking jacket." Indeed, he did.
