The Story
Lingering controversy and a sense of finality followed The Beatles' 1966 North American tour. Lennon's months-old "We're more popular than Jesus..." interview with Maureen Cleave of the London Evening Standard jeopardized the tour before it began. Christian fundamentalists, particularly in the southern regions of the US, were outraged. Several radio stations instituted broadcast bans, organized bonfires, and invited listeners to burn their Beatles records and merchandise. Most stations imposing a ban lifted them after Lennon apologized, but death threats, empty seats, and security concerns persisted throughout the tour.
The Beatles' 1966 North American tour setlist: 'Rock and Roll Music,' 'She's a Woman,' 'If I Needed Someone,' 'Day Tripper,' 'Baby's in Black,' 'I Feel Fine,' 'Yesterday,' 'I Wanna Be Your Man,' 'Nowhere Man,' 'Paperback Writer,' 'Long Tall Sally'
Support acts: The Ronnettes, The Cyrcle, Bobby Hebb, and The Remains
