The Story
On Sunday afternoon, February 9, 1964, before their historic, nationally televised live performance on CBS' The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles taped an insert for what would be their third consecutive appearance on the show for broadcast on February 23, 1964. Separate audiences were seated for the afternoon and evening performances.
During the afternoon taping, The Beatles performed three songs: 'Twist and Shout,' 'Please Please Me,’ and closed with 'I Want To Hold Your Hand.'
Sullivan brought The Beatles back on stage for an additional press op following the taping. Photographer Eve Bowen captured this unique and rare angle from The Beatles' viewpoint on the night 73 million viewers tuned in for the group's American debut.
Other guests appearing on the 02/23/64 broadcast: Cab Calloway, Acker Bilk, Morecambe & Wise, Gordon & Sheila MacRae, Dave Barry, Morty Gunty, Gloria Bleezarde, and marionettes, Pinky & Perky.
