The Story

The Kinks, featuring temporary bassist John Dalton, appear on this week's Ready Steady Go! with live performances of the group's latest single, 'Sunny Afternoon,' along with the as-yet-unreleased Ray Davies composition, 'Dandy.' 'Sunny Afternoon' will soon push The Beatles' 'Paperback Writer' from the top spot, reaching No. 1 for the week ending July 13. 'Dandy' will become a top-5 US hit for Herman's Hermits in September.

Ray Davies is at Pye Studios on the 27th and 28th to finalize mixing and sequencing on the new Kinks LP, Face To Face. Davies aims to add two additional tracks to the 14 already slated for the album. Despite his efforts, Pye will release the Face To Face LP in October with 14 tracks.

One song reportedly under consideration and worked on this week is 'Lilacs and Daffodils' (aka 'Sir Jasper'). Though the song has yet to see any form of release, it is unique in Kinks lore as being the only song (not counting the Donald Duck-like quacks kicking off Soap Opera's 'Ducks On The Wall') featuring a vocal contribution from drummer Mick Avory — though Avory today has no recollection of the track or of ever providing vocals.

Also appearing on this week’s Ready Steady Go!: Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, Norma Tanega, Tom Jones, Dave Berry, and an interview with former Yardbirds bassist, Paul Samwell-Smith
