The Story

The Kinks take position prior to performing ‘Dead End Street’ on BBC1’s Top of the Pops

This date marks the televised return of original bassist Pete Quaife to the group following a serious road accident involving the band’s van the previous June.

To mark his return, Quaife was chosen to share his opinions while being played the latest pop releases in the Blind Date column appearing in this week’s Melody Maker. Among the discs he reviews, Quaife seems to become particularly irritated while listening to Keith Relfs second solo-release, ‘Shapes In My Mind;Keith Relf. What is this guy doing? What the hell is he doing? To me it seems that The Yardbirds and Keith Relf as a solo singer just don’t know where they’re going. They just float around going from one side to another. After all this time they still don’t have a definite approach. They’ve got a fabulous guitarist in Jeff Beck. Wow, he’s ridiculous. But I just don’t know what to say. Take it off.”
