The Story

Jim McGuinn, nearly two years before being name-dropped in The Mamas & Papas hit single, ‘Crique Alley,’ stoically peers over his trademark granny glasses toward the camera on the set of Ready Steady Go!

Upon the group’s London arrival, McGuinn is recognized as the de facto leader of The Byrds in the eyes of the British press due to his eloquence and personability. Still, McGuinn is viewed as a bit of an eccentric. Norrie Drummond of the New Musical Express (August 6) enquires about the slide-rule that McGuinn inexplicably keeps in his jacket pocket. ‘Oh, that. I always carry it, just in case.’

According to a report in TV Pop Diaries, for reasons unclear Ready Steady Go! director Michael Lindsay-Hogg refuses to show McGuinn during The Byrds’ ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ segment.

Also appearing on this week’s Ready Steady Go!: The Who (who perform as a three-piece without Roger Daltry, who is ill), Sonny and Cher, and Brian Poole & The Tremeloes.
