The Story

Ray Davies, prior to performing ‘Dead End Street’ on BBC1’s Top of the Pops

This is the satisfied face of a twenty-two year-old genius on a creative roll. In terms of chart placement, 1966 was The Kinks’ most consistent and commercially successful year. But the year was not without its setbacks. In addition to five UK Top Ten hits, the band experienced one nervous breakdown, and one serious road accident. Without a doubt, the highlight of the year for The Kinks was knocking The Beatles and ‘Paperback Writer’ from the coveted #1 spot with ‘Sunny Afternoon.’ Its follow-up, ‘Dead End Street,’ has entered the UK Top Ten this week at #8, on its way to an eventual chart high at #6. And before 1967 turns to summer, The Kinks will once again be at the top of the charts with the startlingly beautiful ‘Waterloo Sunset,’ arguably the finest pop song ever recorded.

Also appearing in studio on this week’s Top of the Pops!: Jimmy Ruffin, The Easybeats, and Tom Jones.
