The Story
Following the success of the all-Liverpool special edition of Lucky Stars (Summer Spin), which aired June 29, ABC Television tapes a second all-Liverpool program, Thank Your Lucky Stars on Merseyside, for the Christmas holidays. Making their eighth Thank Your Lucky Stars appearance of the year, The Beatles mime to four songs (their most ever performed on the show): 'I Want To Hold Your Hand,' 'All My Loving,' 'Twist And Shout,' and 'She Loves You.'
The day before, The Beatles appear behind the bar of the Wimbledon Palais Theatre for a Southern Area Fan Club meet and greet. The group shakes hands with a disorganized mob of nearly 3000 delighted fans who slowly herd past their heroes before a mid-afternoon performance. Palais management, fearing for the safety of the theater's stage against an onslaught of crazed Beatlemaniacs, constructed a makeshift platform for The Beatles and surrounded it with a steel cage to keep the anticipated teenaged mayhem at bay. Later, during the performance and beyond the reach of fans crushing against the cage, John Lennon reportedly quips, "If they press any harder, they'll come through as chips."
Also appearing on this week's Thank Your Lucky Stars: Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas: 'I'll Keep You Satisfied,' Cilla Black: 'Love Of The Loved,' Tommy Quickly: 'Kiss Me Now,' Gerry & The Pacemakers: 'You'll Never Walk Alone,' 'I Like It,' The Searchers: 'Sugar and Spice,' The Breakaways: 'That Boy Of Mine,' and George Martin presents The Beatles with two gold discs for 'She Loves You' and 'I Want To Hold Your Hand
