The Story

The Yin and Yang of British Pop. The Kinks are once again at Rediffusion Studios in Wembley to plug ‘Til the End of the Day’ on Ready Steady Go! as the disc reaches its highest UK chart position this week at #6. The show has been cut to a half-hour and reverted back to lip-sync performances as the sound quality achieved during its recent run of live performances had been poor.

Never ones to let a routine television appearance go by without a scrape, The Kinks find a way to land on their arses. A contemporary report in Melody Maker regarding The Kinks’ appearance on RSG! had this to say: Ray Davies was knocked out when he collided with an engineer backstage while their drummer, Mick Avory, was unwell during rehearsals, so their road manager Sam Curtis took over on drums while Avory recovered enough for the broadcast.”

Also appearing on this week’s Ready Steady Go!: Fontella Bass, Lee Dorsey, and Patti LaBelle & Her Belles
